Tuberculosis of the Upper Respiratory Tract

Abstract
Upper respiratory tract tuberculosis was common in the past and was usually associated with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Recent advances in chemotherapy have reduced the incidence of the upper respiratory tract tuberculosis to such a degree
that
it is
usually forgotten when the differential diagnosis of upper respiratory lesions is considered. Early diagnosis is important because, once recognized, tuberculous infection of the upper respiratory tract may be readily eradicated by medical
treatment.
Fifty five cases of upper respiratory tract tuberculosis were reviewed to assess the clinical features of the disease. The lesions were larynx in 31 cases, oropharynx 9 cases, nasopharynx 8 cases, and oral cavity 5 cases. The condition was
generally
presented in males of middle age. The clinical appearances frequently mimic a tumor or chronic non-specific inflammation. Histological examination of biopsy material was usually the diagnostic procedure.
